Mrs Darley’s Pagan Rites of Passage
Honouring and Celebrating the Scared Journey of Life
Both our entry into this world, and our departure from it, ensure that we each experience two of the most
profound and mysterious Rites of Passage. In these liminal moments, we find ourselves neither in this world or the next, but in the symbolic corridor of betwixt and between.A similar analogy can also be applied to all Rites of Passage as we journey from cradle to grave, for each one asks us to leave people, places or status in order to move toward the unknown, the unfamiliar and the untested. It is within these liminal times, that we often experience both our darkest fears, and the flutterings of much-longed for excitement.
Mrs Darley’s Pagan Rites of Passage explores the major Rites that many will experience along the path of life, from birth to puberty, from marriage to divorce and from retirement to death. Each chapter presents the history and folklore of differing life stages, whilst also offering suggestions as to how they might be celebrated.
Woven throughout the book, are tales of the wise and enigmatic Mrs Darley, my next-door-neighbour when I lived on Bodmin Moor in Cornwall back in the 1990’s. Every encounter with Mrs Darley helps to illustrate the importance of each Rite of Passage, and the profound impact they can have upon our lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another cracking Mrs Darley book.
I love ALL Carole’s book about her friend and neighbour, Mrs Darley. I love the style of writing and find it so innovating to have the mix of fact and fiction, within the same book. I have all the books and have reread them several times. (C bull 6 August 2022)
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent must read book
Excellent book, enjoyed all of it! It has very interesting information about other cultures and our own, with Mrs Darley tales in-between to tie everything together. The book covers important times in peoples lives; moving from one ‘phase’ to another in all kinds of ways, be they large known events or more private ones, some lovely historical information and ways that people celebrate or acknowledge these times, a really enjoyable read and I intend to read and/or reference it again!
(Just one item to mention is in one rites of passage section it mentions about the time needed to register a birth and it can come across as this being for the whole of the UK, however whilst the length of time is correct for England, Wales and Northern Ireland (42 days), the time you have to register a birth in Scotland is actually less at 21 days – a bit picky I know, but thought it was best to mention it for all those fact loving people! It doesn’t spoil the book at all!) (Davidson 26th July 2022)
