Herbal Tisanes (herbal teas), have formed part of the Wise Woman and Cunning Man’s magickal and healing tool kit for thousands of years. In today’s world, although we may not be well versed in the making of poultices and potions, we can all make a cup of herbal tea.  Strictly speaking however, herbal teas do not contain tea, and therefore the correct terminology is  ‘a herbal tisane’ (originally from the Greek ptisane, meaning ‘peeled barley’ and the subsequent drink made from it). During the Middle Ages, the word tisane referred to any medicinal drink, whilst in the late twentieth century, it was brought back into vogue when herbal drinks once again became popular.

We offer a wide selection of loose, dried herbs, all of which are of culinary quality, to enable you to make the perfect tisane and of course, they are also ideal to use in your magickal work.

How to Make the Perfect Herbal Tisane
  1. Place a half to one tea measuring spoon of herbs into a mug, or one to two heaped tea measuring spoons of herbs into a 500 -750ml teapot, according to taste.
  2. Bring the kettle to the boil and then allow to cool for 2 minutes before pouring. This ensures that the tisane does not become bitter and will preserve the plant’s active ingredients.
  3. A tisane made from leaves or flowers should be allowed to steep for between 3-5 minutes according to taste. If you are using roots, such as Valerian, then a steeping time of 8 minutes is required.
  4. For best results either use a tea infuser or tea ball in a cup, or a teapot with a built in infuse. The same leaves can be used at least twice, provided you remove them from the water after each use, although the steeping time will need to be a little longer. A little honey may be used to sweeten.
